MyVMS NVR FAQ

Admintool asks for a password

Admintool operations require the username and password of the main MyVMS administrator. By default, the username is admin and the password is empty.

How can I reset the administrator password for MyVMS NVR?

Follow these steps:

  1. Take a USB flash drive larger than 1 GB and format it as NTFS.
  2. Create a text file named password-reset.txt in the root directory of the USB flash drive.
  3. Paste the MyVMS NVR address into password-reset.txt. You can copy it from Manage → MyVMS NVR name → Utilities.
  4. Insert the USB flash drive into the recorder USB port and restart the device by switching the power off and on.

All user passwords will be reset. Settings and user accounts will remain unchanged.

How can I do a factory reset?

You can perform a complete factory reset of all MyVMS NVR settings through the local interface or through the network.

Using the local interface

  1. Open Manage → MyVMS NVR name → Utilities → Factory Reset.

Using LAN or Internet via TURN service

  1. Open Observer and connect to MyVMS NVR.
  2. Open Manage → MyVMS NVR name → Utilities → Factory Reset.
Observer does not connect to MyVMS NVR, but the device is visible in Admintool

Possible reasons and solutions:

MyVMS NVR is in a different subnet

  1. Change the recorder IP address in the local menu: Manage → MyVMS NVR name → Utilities.
  2. Via LAN: Observer → Connect to servers → DVR Administration tool → Network → Network settings.

IP address filtering was previously configured

  1. Change the computer IP address to one that is included in the IP address filter list.
  2. Do a factory reset via LAN: Observer → Connect to servers → DVR Administration tool → Support → Factory reset.
  3. Export the settings via LAN: Observer → Connect to servers → DVR Administration tool → Settings → Backup MyVMS settings. Send the created .bkp file to technical support with a description of the problem. You will receive a corrected file that can be imported back through Settings → Restore from backup.
MyVMS NVR does not recognize the hard drive

Possible reasons and solutions:

  • Unsupported partition or file system. Format the hard drive through Observer → Connect to servers → DVR Administration tool → Support → Format HDD, or locally through Manage → MyVMS NVR name → Utilities. Warning: formatting will erase all data on the drive.
  • Dynamic disk. MyVMS NVR does not work with dynamic disks. Convert the dynamic disk to a basic disk or format it with the appropriate settings. Warning: formatting will erase all data.
  • Damaged SATA cable. Replace the cable.
  • Faulty hard drive. Test the hard drive on a computer and replace it if necessary.
How can I copy files from an Ext4 HDD in Windows?

To copy recordings from the hard drive, install the Ext2Fsd driver. Then find the drive and assign it a letter.

  1. Right-click the drive and select Change drive letter.
  2. Open Tools → Mountpoint Management.

We recommend using the HDD in read-only mode. Do not write to the drive or move files because of Ext4 file system specifics.

IP cameras do not display locally in the MyVMS NVR interface, but they are visible on the client PC

Possible reasons:

  • The video stream uses MPEG4 compression. To work with MyVMS NVR, IP cameras must be configured to use H.265 or H.264.
  • The resolution is higher than supported. Multiview supports substreams up to 640×480. Fullscreen supports up to 5 MP on NVR 5S and up to 8 MP on NVR 10S and 20S.
Can the recorder provide RTSP streams?

MyVMS NVR can provide a separate RTSP stream for each channel.

rtsp://username:password@192.168.0.123:9784/cameras/CamN/streaming/main
rtsp://username:password@192.168.0.123:9784/cameras/CamN/streaming/sub

CamN is the number of the video source. Numbering starts from 0, so Camera 1 is CamN = 0.

Which ports does MyVMS NVR use?

The default ports are:

  1. 9780 — Observer Surveillance / Playback.
  2. 9786 — Web server.
  3. 9784 — RTSP.
  4. 9796 — Admintool service.

Ports can be changed in the recorder administration section: Manage → Network.

During multiview playback, the “No record” message appears

Recording mode may be configured by detection or disabled. Check the camera recording settings.

Can MyVMS NVR be used as a client workstation?

MyVMS NVR can receive video and audio streams from other MyVMS video devices and display them on a connected monitor. It can work without an HDD.

I cannot connect to MyVMS NVR by domain name

Possible reasons and solutions:

  • The recorder does not have Internet access. Check that MyVMS NVR is connected to the network. If the connection is protected by a firewall, make sure MyVMS NVR is allowed to access the Internet.
  • Incorrect recorder network settings. If the recorder uses a static IP address, make sure DNS and Gateway settings are correct. In most cases, they match the router IP address.
  • Incorrect date or time settings. Synchronize the time locally or through the network: Observer → Manage → MyVMS NVR name → Utilities → Date/Time.
  • IP address filtering was previously configured. Add the new client IP address to the filter, or clear the filter list. An empty list accepts all connections.
  • Non-standard NAT ports are used. If direct connection through non-standard forwarded ports stops working, automatic connection via TURN may not work because TURN uses the default ports 9780 and 9786 by default. Check the NAT configuration or return ports to defaults: Observer working port — 9780, Web server — 9786.
Entries are missing in the event log

Possible reasons:

  • There is no directory for recording the archive. The event log is written to the local hard drive specified as the archive recording path.
  • Several archive recording paths are configured, and some of them do not exist. Delete missing directories to fix the issue.
Recording to a network resource does not work

Check whether the network resource can be accessed from another computer in the same local network as the NVR.

During configuration, the following requirements apply:

  1. The resource address must use an IP address, for example: \\192.168.1.2\line_archive\ instead of \\Office-PC\line_archive\. The device does not support NetBIOS names used by Windows.
  2. The full path to the network resource must already exist before configuration.
Network resource recording stops after a while

If the network resource is located on a computer running Microsoft Windows, make the following registry changes:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\LargeSystemCache = 1

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\Size = 3

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\IRPStackSize = REG_DWORD 0f(15)

After making changes to the registry, restart the computer.

Can I directly connect 3G/4G USB modems?

All modern USB modems should work. Connect the USB modem and access the recorder by MyVMS domain name through the TURN service.

How can I update MyVMS NVR firmware?

You can update MyVMS NVR firmware through the local interface or through the network.

Local firmware update

  1. Download the firmware file for the specific NVR model.
  2. Copy it to the root directory of an NTFS-formatted USB flash drive larger than 1 GB.
  3. Connect the USB drive to the recorder USB port.
  4. Open Manage → MyVMS NVR name → Utilities → Firmware → Update.
  5. Select the firmware file and click Select.

Network firmware update

  1. Download the firmware file for the specific NVR model.
  2. Open Observer → Connect to server → DVR Administration tool → Support → Update firmware.
  3. Select the downloaded firmware file and enter the username and password of the main MyVMS administrator. By default: admin, no password.

The firmware will be updated automatically and the device will restart. Settings should be saved.

The second monitor is not working

Working with two monitors:

  • Monitors and their capabilities are detected only at startup.
  • Connecting or disconnecting cables after startup will not change the display mode.
  • If no monitors are connected at startup, the “one VGA monitor” mode is activated.
  • If two monitors are connected, HDMI is always the main monitor and is placed on the left.
  • Supported resolutions depend on monitor capabilities: 1920×1080 and 1280×1024. VGA is always 1280×1024.
  • If two-monitor mode is activated, the second monitor works in multiview surveillance mode only and does not support mouse control.
How can I reboot the recorder?

You can reboot the device locally or remotely:

Observer → Manage → MyVMS NVR name → Utilities → Reboot
How do I set the time and date?

Time and date can be configured locally or through the network. After configuration, the time synchronizes with pool.ntp.org or specified NTP servers if the difference between the current device time and the time received via NTP does not exceed 25 minutes.

Set time and date in Manage

Observer → Manage → MyVMS NVR name → Utilities

Using the Administration tool in a local network

  1. Open Observer → Connect to server → DVR Admintool tab.
  2. Select the device and click Clock.
  3. Set the time zone and synchronize the time with the PC.
